Growing up in Yerington, NV, in a community where everyone knew everyone, my father's business dealings on his farm were often sealed with a handshake and a good judge of character. This personal touch defined his approach to business. He learned the value of reputation early on—his clients came through word-of-mouth, making every satisfied customer crucial.

Megan Lee's farm life with brown horse

Raised by parents who also ran a small business, my father inherited a wealth of knowledge about record-keeping and building connections within the small business community. According to him, accounting was a "simple way of doing things," a straightforward manual approach passed down from his parents. His desk, in the corner of his room, was always overflowing with papers. He kept an old book with tattered pages for jotting down payments and keeping tabs on who owed him. Always in the back of his mind were the essentials: making sure there was enough money for animal feed and keeping track of his inventory.

Believe me, I often think how much easier my father's life would have been if he had access to BILL's products right from the start of his business. They would have been a game changer in simplifying his accounting practices. Even more fitting, his name is Bill, which almost feels like destiny lining up a perfect match with our products.

The need for innovation in small businesses

This story of my father's farm life was deeply connected to community trust and hard work, highlighting the challenges faced by small businesses and the need for innovation. If we had known about BILL back when I was a kid, it would have lightened my father's load of managing finances, accelerating both payments received and expenses handled, and saving him countless hours. With that time back, he could've concentrated on things that truly mattered, such as passing on his farming knowledge to us and contributing more to the community.

A personal mission to revolutionize finance for SMBs

Today, the products we're building at BILL are revolutionizing how small business owners like my father manage their finances. It's not just about digitizing transactions; it's about honoring their legacy by providing them with resources that respect their time and labor.

This personal history is not only the fuel for my motivation for recruiting talent to work at BILL but also the very thing that brings me back every day with renewed purpose and a profound sense of pride. It aligns perfectly with my own experiences and core values, driving me to seek out and bring on board individuals eager to be part of a mission-driven company and share a passion for genuinely impacting SMBs around the world.

Why we innovate with purpose, drive, and curiosity

In reflecting on my father's journey, I see how important it is to build tools that simplify financial processes and honor small business owners' hard work. At BILL, we are committed to creating solutions that give entrepreneurs more time to focus on what matters most to them. Every day, we work toward this mission with passion and purpose.

If you're inspired by the idea of making a real impact on businesses like these and want to be part of a team driven by innovation and heart, we encourage you to learn more about our culture and open roles.
