As we celebrate Women's History Month at BILL, we're highlighting our amazing community of women engineers who help us innovate every day.

For many women in engineering, passion is the key motivator—it fuels the hours spent debugging, problem-solving, and innovating.

Our engineers don’t just write code—they build solutions that empower small and mid-size businesses, helping them navigate complex financial workflows with ease.

Morgan, a Senior Software Engineer in our Draper

Morgan, a Senior Software Engineer in our Draper, UT office, captures this mindset perfectly:

"The best engineers I’ve worked with don’t just clock out at the end of the day—they stay curious. They love the challenge, and they push themselves to learn more because it’s not just their job; it’s their passion."

This passion isn’t just about technology—it’s about impact. Padmini, Senior Director of Engineering in San Jose, CA, leads teams that build BILL’s payment infrastructure, moving $1.5 billion in total payment volume daily. She thrives on the challenges that come with scaling:

"What excites me is the impact of what we build. When you know your work directly affects thousands of businesses, you push yourself to innovate, adapt, and find better solutions."

Entrepreneurship and autonomy in action

BILL’s engineering culture isn’t about following rigid top-down mandates. Engineers here are builders, problem-solvers, and entrepreneurs who are trusted to take ownership of their work.

Raj, Engineering Manager, joined BILL as an individual contributor but quickly grew into leadership because she saw an opportunity to lead:

"I wanted to be a manager, but I didn’t wait for someone to hand me that opportunity. I stepped up, led my team, and proved that I was ready. At BILL, when you raise your hand, leadership listens and supports you in reaching your goals."
Raj, Engineering Manager

Morgan echoes this, emphasizing how autonomy accelerates growth:

"At BILL, engineers take full ownership. From the moment I pick up a JIRA ticket, I’m trusted to drive the solution. The review process is intense, but that’s what makes you better—because the people here genuinely want to see you grow."

BILL’s culture encourages engineers to challenge the status quo, ask hard questions, and propose new ideas. Some of our most impactful features started as casual conversations over lunch.

"One of our most lucrative activation features came from a random idea that someone mentioned during lunch. Here, good ideas can come from anywhere." – Morgan

Why culture is the catalyst for career growth

At BILL, culture isn’t just a buzzword—it’s what enables engineers to do their best work

Padmini describes it best:

"We are authentic, humble, fun, and nimble. When engineers feel empowered to be themselves, share ideas, and take risks, that’s when true innovation happens."
Padmini

Psychological safety is a core part of BILL’s engineering culture. It means that asking questions, challenging assumptions, and learning from failure are not only accepted but encouraged.

"I’ve worked at companies where speaking up felt risky. At BILL, we expect engineers to question things, to think critically, and to push back when something doesn’t make sense. That’s how we grow, evolve and push boundaries." – Padmini

Opportunities to innovate and make an impact

We empower our teams to drive innovation and contribute to solutions that reach and benefit a wide range of businesses.

“I’m excited about expanding payment capabilities to boost financial inclusion through faster payments and expanding solutions to untapped markets. We’re now able to cater to a wider segment of our customers and vendors, and customize offerings based on their needs.” - Padmini

Conferences and community

For women in tech, finding a workplace that values inclusivity, mentorship, and opportunity can be a game-changer.

BILL provides numerous avenues for women employees to grow and thrive in their careers, including participation in conferences like the CA Tech Conference and the Women in Tech Texas Chapter. There are also employee resource groups, which are open to all employees, focused on women and diversity.

"When I joined, I had mentoring left and right. The people here genuinely cared about my growth. I grew more in my first six months at BILL than in the previous three years combined." – Morgan
