Learn moreA guide to our hiring process
At BILL, our candidate promise is to guide people through each step of the hiring process with transparency, timeliness, and open communication. From the moment you apply to the final decision, we aim to ensure candidates feel informed, valued, and confident in showcasing skills, motivations, values, and achievements.
Our hiring process is tailored to match the variety of roles and teams across BILL. While specific steps may differ with each role, in this post we aim to provide a general resource candidates can use to prepare and succeed.
For all roles, we look for candidates who embody our values—being passionate, humble, accountable, fun, and authentic.
Come prepared to discuss your achievements, challenges, and what excites you about joining BILL. We know this is a serious time commitment and we don’t take that lightly. FYI: We use BrightHire during all of our interviews, which helps ensure the conversation stays focused and organized. It also allows the recruiter to fully engage with you instead of taking extensive notes, creating a smoother, more personal experience, and helping us accurately represent your story to the hiring team.
Applying
Our application process is straightforward. Once you’ve identified a role that matches your skills and interests, submit your resume online—no cover letters needed. A recruiter will review your application, and if there’s a potential fit, we’ll contact you—via phone or email—to arrange a recruiter screen to discuss next steps.
Recruiter screen
During this initial 30-minute phone conversation our recruiter will learn more about your background, career goals, and interest in BILL. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask questions about the role, as well as our mission, values, and culture.
Meet the hiring manager
One of our recruiting coordinators will email you to find a time to meet the hiring manager—most likely via Zoom. In this conversation you will dive deeper into the expectations of the role and discuss how your experience aligns with the needs of the team. This is a two-way conversation to ensure mutual alignment between you BILL.
Technical screen (tech roles only)
For technical roles, our recruiting coordinator will arrange for you to complete a 1-hour HackerRank live coding exercise via Zoom. This part of our interview assesses your ability to solve algorithmic problems while explaining your thought process.
Functional exercise or assessment (role dependent)
Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete an exercise or assessment to demonstrate your expertise. For example, technical candidates might participate in a system design exercise/retrospective, while non-technical candidates could present a business case.
Team interview
This is your opportunity to individually meet with 3–5 key members of the extended team and cross-functional partners. Our recruiting coordinators work hard to ensure an efficient schedule for these interviews and candidates should expect to block 4–6 hours for completion.
For technical roles (depending on level and role), interviews may include coding, system design, retrospectives, and a soft skills evaluation. For non-technical roles, the focus will be on collaboration, core skills essential for success in the role, and alignment with our company values.
Ask your own questions. Toward the end of the interview, you’ll have the chance to ask questions. Use this time to explore the role further, including what success looks like, team dynamics, and the challenges and opportunities within the position. You can also ask about BILL’s culture, values, and community to better understand how they align with what you’re looking for next.
Hiring decision
After completing all interviews, the hiring team thoroughly reviews your application and feedback from interviewers. We aim to make decisions promptly and keep you informed throughout the process. Two days after the final decision, all candidates receive a survey about their experience—please take this as it allows us to continually improve our candidate experience. For those who join BILL, we’ll guide you through the onboarding process to ensure a smooth start.
Please be patient. While your part of the process may be finished, the hiring team may still be working through their review and other commitments, such as regular work and travel. If you have any questions or need an update, feel free to reach out to your recruiter—they’re here to support you every step of the way.
Offer to be a BILLder
There are quite a few steps in creating an offer and your recruiter will be working hard to work through those as quickly as possible. Once the offer is received, we hope for your final decision within five business days. At the offer stage you’ll also be given the opportunity to connect with an employee resource group (ERG) ambassador who can give you perspective on life inside BILL as an active member of one or more ERGs.
FAQ’s: Most common interview questions
What’s the typical timeline from application to hire?
At BILL, we're committed to providing a timely and efficient hiring process. Our goal is to make a decision from the recruiter screen to the final hiring decision within 15 business days or less. If you advance in the process, your recruiting partner will provide clear details about timelines and expectations during your initial conversation.
Can I apply to more than one role?
Yes! We encourage you to apply to any roles you feel inspired by and meet the qualifications for. This gives us a better sense of where your skills and interests align within BILL.
I need accommodation for my interview. Who do I contact?
We’re happy to assist! If you need an accommodation during your application or interview process, please communicate that directly with your recruiter and they will ensure you receive the support you need.
What if I don’t meet ALL the requirements listed?
We are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace and recognize that every individual brings a unique set of skills, knowledge and experiences. So if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
Should I send a thank you note after my interviews?
This is a nice gesture, but not required and not a deciding factor for an offer. If you’d like to send a note, forward one to your recruiter, who can share accordingly.
How often can I check in with my recruiter for updates?
During the stages of the interview process, it’s natural for candidates to want to check in. You’re free to do so if you choose. You can expect to hear back from your recruiter within two business days of any interview stage.
What tips do you have for preparing my conversations with recruiters, hiring managers and interviewers?
Please turn your camera on and come to learn about BILL’s mission and customer focus. We look for people who are aligned with our values and can add to our culture, so come prepared to speak to both of those topics.
What if I’ve already interviewed at BILL before? Can I reapply?
Absolutely! We encourage candidates to reapply if their skills and interests align with a current opening. Additionally, we keep your previous application on file and often review it for new roles that might be a great fit for your experience. If you did not pass an interview, we typically recommend waiting 6 months before reapplying to allow time for skill development and growth. If there’s an opportunity that aligns with your background, we may even reach out to you proactively.
What tools or platforms are used for virtual interviews?
We primarily use Zoom for virtual interviews, along with HackerRank for technical assessments and BrightHire to enhance the interview experience. GoodTime is used to streamline the interview scheduling process, allowing you to submit your availability in real-time based on the interviewers' schedules. If any additional tools are needed for your specific interview process, your recruiter will provide all the details in advance.
What should I wear to my interview?
We want you to feel comfortable, so casual or business casual is appropriate. If you're unsure, your recruiter can provide guidance based on the specific role or setting.
